Laura Romito, DDS, MS, is Associate Professor of Oral Biology at Indiana University School of Dentistry (IUSD). Dr. Romito graduated from The Ohio State University with a B.S. degree in Food Science & Nutrition, and also earned her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from Ohio State. She completed a general practice residency at the University of Nebraska and operated a private general dentistry practice full time prior to entering academe. Dr. Romito is certified by the Mayo Clinic as a Tobacco Cessation Treatment Specialist (CTTS) and is Director of the Nicotine Dependence Program at IUSD. She is a member of the IUPUI Tobacco Cessation and Biobehavioral Group (IUPUI TCBG), The American and Indiana Dental Associations, the American Dental Education Association and the Academy of General Dentistry. Dr. Romito teaches several didactic and clinical courses for dental and dental hygiene students including biomedical sciences, nutrition, tobacco dependence education, restorative and clinical dentistry. She has presented numerous continuing education courses in local, national and international settings. Dr. Romito’ s research on tobacco, dental education and other oral health topics has been disseminated through numerous presentations, abstracts and publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals.

Dr. Joan Pellegrini graduated from Fairleigh Dickinson University with Associate and Baccalaureate degrees in Dental Hygiene. She received a Master of Science Degree in Dental Hygiene Education and Administration from Columbia University School of Dental and Oral Surgery. Joan earned a Doctor of Philosophy from Virginia Commonwealth University School of Education, with a concentration in Adult Learning. As a full time member of the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry faculty, Dr. Pellegrini directs dental hygiene theory courses, and evidence-based decision-making courses for dental students. She lectures in other dental and dental hygiene courses, and participates in clinical teaching with dental hygiene and dental students as well. She represents the School of Dentistry on the VCU University Council, the Division of Inclusive Excellence and on ad hoc committees for the University Provost. She is a member of the Health Sciences campus Faculty Learning Community and has presented innovative learning topics with the VCU Center for Teaching Excellence. Dr. Pellegrini is a clinical researcher, being involved in multidisciplinary healthcare research projects at the University. Her areas of professional interest include: motivation and communication for healthcare professionals, adult learning strategies and practice, preventive oral health strategies, and multicultural diversity in healthcare. She has mentored dental hygiene, undergraduate/postgraduate dental and nursing graduate students on thesis and dissertation research and well as mentoring junior dental and dental hygiene faculty. Additionally, Joan is a practicing clinician, seeing patients in the VCU Dental Faculty Practice one half day per week. Joan is a member of the Sigma Phi Alpha National Dental Hygiene Honor Society, the American Dental Hygienists’ Association, and the American Dental Education Association. Dr. Pellegrini is a certified trainer in Basic Life Support (CPR) through the American Heart Association. She is a published author and has presented continuing professional education in local, national and international settings.

Dr. El-Badrawy is Associate Professor of Restorative Dentistry at the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Toronto. She is member of the School of Graduate Studies of the University of Toronto. She also maintains private practice position in Mississauga, Ontario. She had her BDS degree from Cairo University in 1979 and obtained her Masters degree (MSc) from Manchester University, England in 1985. She has certification of the National Dental Examining Board of Canada. She is member of the Academy of Operative Dentistry, the Society for Color and Appearance in Dentistry, the International Association for Dental Research, the Canadian Association for Dental research, the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario and the Ontario Dental Association. She is also Editorial Board member of the International Journal of Dentistry, Case reports in Dentistry, Dental Medium Journal and a reviewer for many others. Dr. Grove is the clinical and lecturing orthodontist in his capacity as Assistant Professor at Western University of Health Sciences, College of Dental Medicine in Pomona, California. He received an AB in Zoology from Humboldt State University in California and his DMD degree from the University of Louisville, a masters degree in orthodontics from Saint Louis University, and a masters degree in education from the University of Southern California. He served for three years as an orthodontist in the U.S. Army, achieving the rank of Major. Dr. Grove also studied with Professor Rudi Slavicek, receiving a masters degree in Interdisciplinary Dentistry from Donau University in Krems, Austria. He is a founder of the global academy, www.iaaid.com . Previously, Dr. Grove was the Clinic Director of Orthodontics at the University of California School of Dentistry, San Francisco, as well as Associate Professor of Orthodontics at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and Roseman University in Henderson, Nevada. Dr. Grove initiated the startup of two internet based companies and was president of both; additionally, he started a multidisciplinary TMD clinic in Reno, Nevada, associated with the University of Nevada Reno Medical School (physicians, dentists, psychologists, and physical therapists). He has published articles and has been a speaker on orthodontics and TMD in the US and Europe. Dr. Alonso is a full-time Assistant Professor in the Department of Comprehensive Care, School of Dental Medicine at Case Western Reserve University. He is Diplomate of the American Board of Orofacial Pain and Fellow of the American Academy of Orofacial Pain. He graduated from the University of Ribeirão Preto, School of Dentistry, Ribeirao Preto, Brazil and earned his certificate in Prosthodontics from Sao Paulo State University, Araraquara, Brazil. His graduate training in Temporomandibular Disorder (TMD) and Orofacial Pain was from the UMDNJ New Jersey Dental School and University of Minnesota. Dr. Gajanan Kulkarni is a tenured Associate Professor of Dentistry at the University of Toronto where he has been working since 1998. After his undergraduate dental training he obtained a M.Sc. degree and followed that with a specialty diploma in Pediatric Dentistry and a Ph.D. in Cell and Molecular Biology from the University of Toronto. Following his formal education Dr. Kulkarni completed two post-doctoral fellowships at Guy’s Hospital, London, UK and Northwestern University, Chicago, IL, USA. He is presently a Fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada and a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. Dr. Kulkarni has over 150 publications and presentations in various fields of basic and clinical dental research and he is on the editorial boards of several journals. His duties as a full-time academic include teaching of undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate students. Dr. Kulkarni also maintains an active research program with several graduate and post-doctoral students. His main research interests are in fields related to Pediatric Dentistry. He, along with one co-investigator, presently holds a Federal Canadian Institutes for Health Research Grant worth nearly $250,000. Complimenting his academic career, Dr. Kulkarni (aka “Dr. Kool” to kids in his practice) practices pediatric dentistry with a special focus on children with special needs. Most recently Dr. Kulkarni, along with his graduate students, has developed a program for the promotion of Infant and Baby Oral Health. He has partnered with several community organizations and has been volunteering regularly to deliver this program. These programs are in communities such as St. James Town and Regent Park which are predominantly low income, new immigrant populations and with lots of children lots of dental problems and little or no access to dental care. Dr. Kulkarni and his students have seen more than 500 families, with more that 1000 children, have been seen in these programs, over the past three years. He is seeing very encouraging results in terms of reduction in dental problems and in parents seeing timely care for their children and themselves. He counts this as his most satisfying and significant professional contribution. Dr. Kulkarni has presented numerous continuing education courses and is an invited speaker to national and international conferences. Topics covered in his courses include: Infant oral health, restorative and pulp therapy for primary teeth, occlusal guidance in the primary and mixed dentition stages, behaviour management and sedation in pediatric patients, management of pediatric emergencies and complications, current standards, policies and guidelines in pediatric dental care.

Prof. Getulio Nogueira is currently Assistant Professor and Iterim Head of the Department of Preventive Dentistry, University of Toronto (Canada). He was Associate Dean of Research at School of Dentistry, Bahiana University (Brazil) from 2001-2007; Head of the Graduate and Undergraduate Periodontics Programs at Faculty of Dentistry, University of Manitoba (Canada) from 2008-2011. He received his DDS in 1991 (UFBA, Bahia, Brazil), M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in 1997/1999 respectively (UNICAMP, Sao Paulo, Brazil). He pursued his post-doctoral training at University of Washington-USA (2003-2004); University of Hong Kong-China (2008). He currently serves as a reviewer of scientific journals in his field, such as the Journal of Periodontal Research, Cytokine, Oral Diseases and Journal of Periodontology, and serves as associate editor of the International Journal of Dentistry. He has been devoted to dental research for 18 years with current focuses on basic and translational studies on periodontal and periimplant diseases and oral biology. He has been obtaining external competitive grants from agencies and also industry. He has received many teaching and research awards during his career. He has published over 85 peer-reviewed papers (English and Portuguese), 128 abstracts, and 6 book chapters. He has supervised over 30 undergrad and 20 graduate students. He was invited for over 50 lectures nationally and internationally on a number of academic and scientific occasions.

He has over 20 years of experience treating malocclusions at early age with a functional approach. Dr. Ramirez-Yañez has published more than 20 scientific articles in peer-review journals about functional appliances and the biological rationale for functional treatment of malocclusions. He is a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Dentistry and Oral Health and the Journal of Orthodontic Science and Practice.
