Jalal Alirza Aliyev was born on June 30th, 1928 in Nakhchivan, the Republic of Azerbaijan. He graduated in 1944 from the Faculty of Natural Sciences of a 2-year Nakhchivan Teachers' Institute and worked as a teacher of biology at schools in remote mountainous villages of Bananyar and Uzunoba of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. In 1946 he entered the Biological Faculty of Azerbaijan State University and graduated in 1951 with distinction. As a third year student (1948), J.Aliyev began to work as a research assistant at the Department of Plant Physiology and then he selected this field of biology as a major for his future scientific activity. He took a post-graduate course at the Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences in 1954, where he was specialized on plant physiology and defended a thesis “Effect of microelements on the growth and productivity of wheat” to receive the scientific degree of the Candidate of Biological Sciences (PhD) in 1955. Sixty five years dynamic researches of Professor Jalal A.Aliyev have been devoted to the study of the theory of photosynthetic activity as a fundamental for productivity of crop plants, mainly wheat. The overall activity of these researches covers physiological, biophysical, biochemical and molecular-genetic bases of plant productivity and also the study of production processes in all levels of structural-functional organization of plant organism - from molecular to the whole plant and sowing. J.Aliyev is the Honoured Scientific Worker (1982). For his great contributions to science in Azerbaijan, J.Aliyev was honoured with the Order of Independence in 1998, the Order of Glory of the Republic of Georgia in 2003, the Honourary diploma of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan in 2008 and with the Order of Glory of the Republic of Azerbaijan in 2013. He was elected as a Member of Parliament of the Republic of Azerbaijan for fourth time (1995, 2000, 2005 and 2010).

Ming Chen received his PhD in Bioinformatics from Bielefeld University, Germany, in 2004. Currently he is working as a full Professor in Bioinformatics at College of Life Sciences, Zhejiang University. His group research work mainly focuses on the systems biology, computational and functional analysis of non-coding RNAs, and bioinformatics research and application for plant sciences. Prof. Chen is serving as an academic leader in Bioinformatics at Zhejiang University. He is a committee member of Chinese societies for “Modeling and Simulation of Biological Systems”, “Computational Systems Biology” and “Functional Genomics & Systems Biology”.

Yongfeng Guo received his Ph.D. in horticulture from Cornell University in 2006 and worked at the University of Michigan as a postdoctoral research fellow after that. He is now a full professor at the Tobacco research Institute, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences. His research involves dissecting the molecular basis of plant developmental processes using tools from genetics, biochemistry, cell biology and systems biology.

Dr. Yang is an associate professor of bioinformatics at the Institute of Pathogen Biology, CAMS&PUMC. He was born in May, 1977 and graduated from Department of Intensive Instruction, Nanjing University in 1999. He got his PhD degree from Lab of Bioinformatics, Institute of Biophysics, Chinese Academy of Science in 2004. His work is focused on comparative genomics and molecular evolution of bacterial pathogens, such as Shigella, Pseudomonas, Mycobacterium and Neisseria etc; he has designed and constructed several specialized molecular databases including the Virulence Factor Database (VFDB). Dr. Yang also has interests in public health related metagenomics studies using the next generation sequencing technologies. He has published over 50 academic papers in peer-reviewed journals within the past decade.

Dr. Zhao got his PhD degree in Computer Science in 2005. Then he worked as postdoctoral fellow in Genome Institute of Singapore and Baylor College Medicine. He focused on the genome rearrangements in evolution and in cancer using comparative genomics approaches. His work on recovering genome rearrangements events in mammalian evolution and in revealing the driving force of cancer genome rearrangements were published in Genome Research in 2009 and 2013. Currently he works in the Department of Bioinformatics and Computational Biology, the MD Anderson Cancer Center(MDACC). He is the key person for implementing the computational pipeline for the Institute of Personalized Cancer Therapy at MDACC. This pipeline is applied to accurately detect the mutations in cancer patients.

Dr. Xiaofeng Zheng had extensive training in both biology and statistical bioinformatics. She received her B.S. in Biological Science and M.S. in Biochemistry & Molecular Biology from Nanjing University (China), and Ph.D. in Biomathematics and Biostatistics from University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. Her PhD thesis (advisor Dr. Shoudan Liang) is about development of novel methods to minimize the impact of sequencing errors in the next-generation sequencing data analysis. She developed a sequencing error correction software MTM, and two SNP calling softwares. After obtaining her PhD degree, she joined Department of Bioinformatics and Computational Biology at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center as a research statistical analyst. She is currently working on establishing pipelines for the next-generation sequencing data analysis and providing bioinformatics support for clinicians from various departments of M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.

Filippo Menolascina was born in Bari (Italy) in 1984 and was awarded a ‘‘Laurea cum Laude’’ degree in Computer Engineering (M.Eng.) from the Technical University of Bari in 2008. His main research topics are focused on the identification and control gene regulatory networks. He obtained his Ph.D. under the supervision of Diego and Mario di Bernardo at the TeleThon Institute of Genetics and Medicine in Naples. Dr. Menolascina currently holds a Postdoctoral Research Associate position at both the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and at the Broad Institute; in 2012 he also joined the Board of Directors of Oliba, a biotech start-up company, as Chief Scientific Officer.

Dr. Sarkar earned his B.S (Hons.) in Chemistry from Presidency College, Calcutta and M.S in chemistry from IIT, Kharagpur, India. This was followed by Ph.D. research from Gates Laboratory in anticancer drug design and the mechanisms of drug action and metabolism at the University of Missouri. After receiving his PhD he joined MIT as postdoctoral associate, where he now spends most of his time in the Wishnok/Tannenbaum mass spectrometry lab. Dr. Sarkar is working in the areas of small molecule medicinal chemistry, reactive oxygen species, inflammation, small molecule biomarker exploration and drug metabolism pharmacokinetics answering fundamental questions toward biomedical applications to the prevention and cure of human diseases. Currently, in collaboration with biotech companies and a number of academic labs, Dr. Sarkar is primarily involved in the mass spectrometry based drug metabolism pharmacokinetics (DMPK) and pharmaco-metabolomics study of human liver and lung on a chip to predict safety, efficacy and toxicity of a series of drugs. He is also involved in metabolites identification of drugs, metabolomics, lipidomics profiling, and analysis of important metabolic pathways of human liver, and lung on a chip, which may help to better understand the molecular mechanism of drug toxicity and idiosyncratic risks in humans, and to further enhance innovation in new drug concept generation in the areas of inflammation, cancer and diabetes. In addition, he worked in the area of chemical biology to discover hydrolases as a potential biomarkers of various inflammatory diseases.
