Biography

Roy G. Beran, trained as a consultant neurologist and accredited sleep physician. Qualifications include MBBS, MD, FRACGP, FRACP, FRCP Ed, FAAN, FANZAN, FAFPHM, Grad Dip Tertiary Ed, Grad Dip Further Ed, FACBS, B Leg S, MHL, FACLM, FRNS, FSASS and FFFLM Hon. Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency AHPRA registration stated Neurology, Public Health and Sleep Medicine. He was a Designated Aviation Medical Examiner for the Civil Aviation Safety Authority, medical assessor for Dispute Resolution for NSW State Insurance Regulatory Authority, assessor for NSW Workers Compensation Commission, and List 1 Neurology Consultant for the Royal Australian Navy RAN. He was a Conjoint Professor of Medicine, University of NSW; Professor, School of Medicine, Griffith University, Queensland; Conjoint Professor, Medical School, Western Sydney University; and Professor and Chair of Medical Law, Sechenov Moscow 1st State University, Moscow, Russia. After Russia invaded Ukraine, he did not re-sign with Sechenov. He was inaugural Visiting Professor for the International Research Institute of Health Law Sciences, Southern Medical University, Guangzhou, China; Visiting Professor, East China University of Political Science and Law, Shanghai, China 2024; keynote speaker UK Splendid Scotland Tour Legal Medicine 2025 and 13th Cross Straights General Practice Conference, Changsha, China 2026. He was a founding Fellow of the Australasian College of Legal Medicine ACLM, Past President thereof stepping down in 2011, remains on Council and was awarded Honorary Life Fellowship. From 2019 till 2026, he was Co Head of Faculty, coordinating ACLM training courses throughout Australia. He is the Australian Governor and Immediate Past President of the World Association for Medical Law WAML, previously serving as President, Secretary General, Executive Vice President and Regional Vice President, and has served on organising committees of many World Congresses for Medical Law, being Programme Chair in 2004 and 2022, both in Australia. He was the first Honorary Fellow of the Faculty of Forensic and Legal Medicine of the Royal College of Physicians London. He helped negotiate with Bond University to create a programme in Legal Medicine in conjunction with the ACLM. In Neurology, he is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians, a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians Edinburgh, Corresponding Fellow of the American Academy of Neurologists, and a Fellow of the Australian and New Zealand Association of Neurologists. He is a Member of the Australasian Sleep Association, having served on various committees thereof. He pioneered clinical trials and research in private practice, being principal author in publications which included leading academic and tertiary referral institutions. He has published approximately 430 papers, book chapters and letters to the editor; presented 480 papers at national and international meetings; written or edited 19 books; serves on numerous editorial boards; and was the Editor in Chief of the WAML international journal Medicine and Law. His research interests include Concussion, Epilepsy, Legal Medicine, Stroke, Sleep, Neuroepidemiology, Neurological Imaging and Medical Education.
