Biography
Dr. Naiera Mohamed Helmy Mohamed is an Associate Professor in the Department of Microbial Biotechnology at the National Research Centre, Egypt. She received her Ph.D. in Microbiology from the Faculty of Science, Ain Shams University, in 2016, following an M.Sc. in Microbiology and a B.Sc. in Chemistry and Microbiology. She has also completed postgraduate diplomas in Molecular Biology and Bioinformatics. In 2022, she served as a Postdoctoral Scholar at Chapman University, School of Pharmacy, USA, where she conducted research on antimicrobial and antifungal peptides. Dr. Helmy has extensive research experience in microbiology, microbial biotechnology, molecular biology, virology, antimicrobial discovery, and bioinformatics. Her research has focused particularly on the isolation and characterization of microbial metabolites and the evaluation of their antimicrobial, antiviral, antifungal, and anticancer activities. She has significant expertise in hepatitis C virus (HCV) research, including HCV cell culture systems, antiviral screening, molecular biology, immunological techniques, recombinant proteins, vaccine development, and the identification of novel therapeutic candidates. Her technical expertise also encompasses bacterial isolation and identification, microbial metabolite extraction and purification, HPLC-based fractionation, nucleic acid extraction, PCR and cloning, mammalian cell culture, ELISA, plaque reduction assays, cytotoxicity assays, wound-healing studies, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, biofilm inhibition assays, and confocal microscopy. She also has experience in bioinformatics, including basic next-generation sequencing (NGS) data analysis, statistical analysis and visualization using R, and molecular docking and drug-design studies using AutoDock Vina. Dr. Helmy has contributed to numerous peer-reviewed publications in areas including antimicrobial peptides, antiviral research, HCV infection, vaccine development, microbial biotechnology, wound healing, biomaterials, and cancer research. She has participated in several national and international research projects funded by the National Research Centre, the Science and Technology Development Fund (STDF), and USAID. She is also a member of professional scientific organizations, including the Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World, the Microbiology Society, and the American Society for Microbiology. Her multidisciplinary research integrates microbiology, molecular biology, virology, biotechnology, immunology, and computational approaches to address challenges in infectious diseases and the development of novel therapeutic and diagnostic strategies.
