Biography
Dr. Valdivia was born and grew up in Lima, Peru. He received his M.D. degree from Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia in 2002. Dr. Valdivia came to the United States for his neurosurgical residency at the University of Arizona, and then moved on to the University of Michigan for his fellowship in Complex and Reconstructive Spine Surgery, specilizing in Spinal Deformity Surgery. Dr. Valdivia joined the Neurosurgery Faculty at the University of Michigan in 2010. Dr. Valdivia's primary research focus has been on cranial surgery, specifically in skull base surgery. He has a special interest in resident education and outreach - particularly in his home country of Peru. Dr. Valdivia's newest endeavor is in leading the Neurosurgical Program at the Ann Arbor VA Hospital with his focus on developing and improving the neurosurgical services at that facility by providing state-of-the-art neurosurgical care to veterans. In addition, he has an interest to develop basic science and clinical research in spine deformity. His most recent research interests involve treatment of spinal deformity, and in vivo models for spinal metastasis.
