Biography

Dr. Juan Manuel Leyva holds a degree in Biochemical Engineering, as well as Master’s and Doctoral degrees in Science. He completed his internationally recognized graduate studies at the Centro de Investigación en Alimentación y Desarrollo, A.C. (CIAD), where his research focused on natural compounds with antioxidant, antimicrobial, and antiviral activities. His doctoral research centered on microbial genomics and shrimp pathogens. He is currently a Full Professor (Professor Titular C) at the Tecnológico Nacional de México (TecNM), affiliated with the Instituto Tecnológico del Valle del Yaqui. His professional experience encompasses teaching, research, academic–industry collaboration, and the training of specialized human resources at both undergraduate and graduate levels. He is Head of the Agricultural Products Analysis Laboratory and serves as an internal auditor for the Integrated Management System (SGI) and the Molecular Biology Laboratory, which is accredited by the Mexican Accreditation Entity (EMA). He is also a member of the Academic Group on Aquaculture Health, Quality, and Safety (ITVAYA-CA-1). His research focuses on bioactive compounds, functional foods, and aquaculture health and safety through microbiological, molecular, and genomic approaches. He has authored more than 15 publications addressing phenolic compounds, antioxidant and antimicrobial activity, Vibrio spp. pathogenicity, antibiotic resistance, shrimp diseases, and pigmented maize with nutritional and functional potential. He also serves as a peer reviewer for international scientific journals, including the International Journal of Food Microbiology, among others. In addition, he has delivered courses and workshops, participated in national and international conferences, and conducted science outreach activities at school fairs and events aimed at children and young people. Since 2020, he has been a member of Mexico’s National System of Researchers (SNII) and the Mexican Society of Biochemistry (SMB). He is also a member of the TecNM Food and Agribusiness Sector Support Network (RASA) and has received training as an internal auditor in FSSC 22000, HACCP, and ISO 9001. He participates in the CONAHCYT National Laboratory LANIBIOC, focused on the molecular detection of biological agents and contaminants. His career integrates applied research, teaching, and the strengthening of scientific capabilities to address agri-food and aquaculture challenges in northwestern Mexico
