Biography

Dr. Dukes received the Ph.D. in 1980 from Kent State University. On the John Carroll University Faculty since 1976, he has served as both Department Chairman (1988-1995, 1997) and Acting Associate Dean of Arts and Sciences (1996). He was promoted to Professor of Sociology in 1996. He has also served the College of Arts and Sciences as Director of the Community Research Center (1992 – 2001), the Coordinator of Instructional Media Services (2001 - 2009), and the Director of the Interdisciplinary Minor in Forensic Behavioral Science (2010 – present) for the College of Arts and Sciences at John Carroll University. He has also served as Director of the Master’s Degree Program in Nonprofit Administration for the Graduate School (2005 – 2007). Duane has served as President of the Society for Applied Sociology (1998), as Board Member of the Sociological Practice Association (1996-1999), and as Director of the American Sociological Association Honors' Program (1996-2002). He has published two highly successful books: Teaching Applied Sociology (with co-editors James Petersen and Thomas Van Valey, 2003) and Issues in Community Policing (with co-editor Peter Kratcoski, 1995). His specialty areas include: forensic behavioral science, collective behavior, deviance, violence, applied sociology, social service planning, criminal justice planning, community policing and social research methodology. He recently completed a comprehensive plan for United Way to revise the social service system in Geauga County, Ohio (with Nancy Dukes, 1998). He previously conducted a feasibility study for a model drug court in Cuyahoga County, Ohio for the American Bar Association (with Ernest DeZolt, 1995). In addition to a Cleveland Faculty Fellowship for research on crime prevention programs in Cleveland's Department of Public Safety (1987), academic honors include John Carroll University's Distinguished Faculty Award (1988), the Cleveland Jaycee's Outstanding Young Clevelander Award (1989), the William P. Dumont Community Service Award (1989) and the Cleveland Task Force on Violent Crime Award for Outstanding Volunteer of the Year (1986). He is listed in Sutton’s Who’s Who in Academia (2011-2012).
