Biography
Dr. Joseph Buell is Director of the Tulane Abdominal Transplant Institute at Tulane Medical Center. Dr. Buell specializes in liver, kidney and pancreas transplantation and hepatobiliary surgery, as well as minimally invasive liver surgery.
He is a clinically active surgical oncologist and transplant surgeon. Previously, he was an intramural investigator at the NIH, Surgery Branch, working in the metabolism section and in conjunction with the Pharmacology Branch. During this time, he studied the mechanism and the ability to modify DNA injuries from cisplatin. Over the last fifteen years, he has worked with and developed several multiple ablation devices. After extensive experience with cryoablation, radiofrequency ablation, microwave ablation and most recently irreversible electroporation, he identified a significant incidence of late recurrence associated with incomplete ablations. These observations evolved from his clinical experience with over 1000 liver tumor patients and through immunohistochemistry analysis and TUNNEL assays on transplant explant specimens. Hepatocellular cancer is the third leading cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide and a leading indication for liver transplantation. Hepatocellular cancer in the setting of liver failure patients has been the most challenging cancer to manage. This disease has been a focus for Dr. Buell’s career for twenty years. He is dedicated to identifying, refining and pioneering new technologies for the treatment of this dramatically rising malignancy.
